Justin Timberlake Givenchy Advert Analysis

The moving text I am analysing is an advert by Justin Timberlake indorsing his Givenchy perfume.

Colour
The colours used throughout this video are all black and white (grey) however a hint of red is used to signify the product. As they are in a romantic city 'Paris' the black and white colours may connote romance.

Composition
There are loads off camera shots used throughout the video to establish the characters, setting and product. There is no text or voice used through the advert only theme music however at the last few seconds voice and text is used to show the perfumes name.

Type of shot
As I said there is varies of shots used throughout the advert, however mostly long and medium shots are used to identify the setting and characters also the product itself. There are establishing shots, close ups of Justin Timberlake’s facial expressions, tracking shot of Justin and the women running up the tower and a point of view shot showing them looking at the city. There are many more shots that wore used, which were very eye catchy as the advert played fast showing many shots keeping my eyes glued to the screen.

Pose
The pose of Justin Timberlake shows him running with a woman in Paris to the Eiffel Tower where they look at the view of the city. They both are dressed in elegant stylish clothing showing they are classy and high standard however when they run towards the tower and look at the view they look fun, happy and enjoyable.

Setting
The setting is in Paris where they run to the Eiffel Tower to see the city view. The city Paris is known of the city of love and romance therefore the couple in the advert maybe a couple and also showing the perfume is a very loving smell and attracts men to love them.

Lighting
There is lots of lighting used in this advert as it is set at night and the city. There is limited lighting at the start of the advert until they reach to the top of the tower where Justin plays a button causing the lights of the city to switch on and off according to the music. This would grab the audience’s attention as it makes your eyes watching the screen.

  1. WWW: Excellent choice of text - and your analysis picks up on the major ideas in it.
EBI: Think more about the connotations of black and white plus the lighting - surely it connotes more than just romance?
LR: What type of lighting does the ad use (think about about our film language lesson)?

  2. LR: As I said black and white connotes romance however in it also can connote the opposite impression of mysterious. In the advert mostly low key lighting has been used as it is set at night time, there is low key lighting at 0:20 on Justin Timberlake's face showing only half of his face clearly and the other half dark as it is covered by shadows. There are high key lighting used to reveal the characters face which you can see at 0:13.
