Reebok Advert Analysis

Colour
The Reebok advert is mainly black and white (grey) which proposes a serious, negative atmosphere, hence black usually represents death, darkness, evil whereas white connotes a sign of purity, goodness etc. An advert is thought to stand out making it eye catchy and attractive to the audience for Reebok to sell their products, however this opposite which makes it unique. The colours can relate to 50 Cent as he used to be in the dark, shady lifestyle, the advert could represent that 50 Cent's past life has transformed into a better, bright lifestyle.

Framing
There is text in the advert which is positioned in the middle right hand side in a large bold font; moreover there is a quote by 50 Cent at the top right hand corner in a smaller font. The quote explains who 50 Cent is and what kind of environment he lives in, furthermore behind the next there is finger prints, this could connote that 50 Cent's life was a rough lifestyle where he suffered consequences such as getting arrested. The other piece of text on the advert 'I am what I am' in a much larger font which stands out more to the audience. The quote suggests that 50 Cent doesn't care about anyone else but himself and people should know who he is and what he does.

Size
The advert mostly focuses on 50 Cent and the main heading 'I am what I am', thus it is large and the text is bolder than the other text which grabs the audience’s attention. Furthermore I think Reebok has used 50 Cents image as the main emphasis because the target audience will be familiar about who he is and what he does. The logo is shown at the bottom right corner; it is very small to distinguish as it blends into the background colours.

Composition
The composition of 50 Cent in the advert is a medium shot showing him from an angle. The advert is divided in two; where 50 Cent is revealed in the left and the other half full of finger prints which characterizes people's finger prints when they go prison. The actual advert is very simple with limited images on it, the main image that would catch the target audiences attention is 50 Cent as he is a famous rapper known worldwide. This convinces the audience to buy this Reebok product.

Pose
The shot used to focus on 50 Cent's face is a medium shot; his boy expression shows he is turned to the side by his shoulders however facing the camera. He looks serious which shows he has really turned his life around to a better person and by showing this he is promoting Reebok

    Type of shot
The type of shot used to portray 50 Cent is a medium close up, hence we could clearly see his body position and facial expression which in serious. Reebok has used a medium shot of 50 Cent so the audience would understand it’s him and would be interested into the product as he is a very famous person. There is also a close up of the finger prints which are a bird’s eye view to the audience; this is catching as it would grip the audience’s attention to see what it is.

Subject matter
The advert shows a symbol of 50 Cent's life, like how his life was and now he is represented in this advert showing he has changed, so could anyone else. As 50 Cent is promoting Reebok's advert many people particularly his fans would like to buy the product too.

Setting
The advert doesn't really show a background, it is mostly dark which is divided in two where 50 Cent is in a black background making him stand out more to grab the audience’s attention. Furthermore the other half shows a background of finger prints which connotes trouble or prison, I think the two backgrounds work really well as they relate, In addition the audience would focus more on buying the product.

Lighting
There isn't much light used as the advert is mainly black and white (grey), the colours connote a mixture feeling hence black represents death, evil and white however connotes purity, innocence. The main lighting used in the advert is a shine of light on 50 Cent's face making him the main centre of attention, also 50 Cent is mainly popular for his crimes and rap. However this advert can show a sign of purity of him signifying Reebok has changed his life around.

  1. WWW: An interesting analysis with some good use of connotation.
EBI: 'Eye catching' rather than 'catchy' and also the shot of 50 Cent is a medium close-up (hence we can clearly see his expression).
LR: Why does emphasising his criminal past appeal to an audience? Wouldn't it have the opposite effect?

  2. LR: Emphasising his criminal past to the audience shows what type of character 50 Cent is also to inform the audience what he has been through his life. The past could show a good connotion showing his life has changed by being presented in the Reebok advert however can also give a negative impression as he has been involved with violence, making the audience think he can influence younger audience by a negative way.
