Media Production Coursework

Mest 2 Initial Thoughts
Me, Navneet and Gagan N are working together for our media coursework to produce a fiction product and print ad campaign. We will be filming a two minute opening sequence of our Tv programme and it will be a hybrid of 'Waterloo Road' and 'Misfits'. This is because, Misfits is a E4 programme and the whole brief is about targeting E4's demographic (15-35) therefore Misfits would be appropriate when we are producing our final product.

Tv Programme Ideas:
- Friends
- Misfits
- Waterloo Road
- One Tree Hill
- 90210
Mest 2 Research
I have chosen five existing programmes which relate to the genre of my production, I will be analysing the first two minutes of the opening sequence of these five programmes talking about film language such as mise-en-scene, sound, cinematography etc. The programmes I have decided to analyse are Friends, Hollyoaks, 90210, Misfits and Made In Chelsea.

Friends

Friends is an American comedy drama produced by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, the programme aired on NBC from 1994 and ended in 2004. Friends focuses on six characters who are best friends living in New York, Manhattan.

The mise en scene starts of by an establishing shot of New York city in the day, this shot informs the audience of the setting of the place telling them it is based in New York at day time, which would be busy with people going to work, shopping or going out. The scene then turn settings at 0:02 into a furniture store were Ross (David Schwimmer) is looking for a sofa with Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), the audience can see the setting has changed were Ross is looking for sofa's as there is a logo behind them saying 'quality and comfort' therefore the audience would automatically know the setting of where they are. Furthermore there are sofa's behind them with costumers making the audience aware they are in a store looking/buying something. Ross (Schwimmer and Rachel (Aniston) are dressed casually, which normal people would wear to go out shopping, however the other male character assisting them is wearing much more formal clothing indicating to the audience that he works at the store and is helping the customers. Furthermore the audience will know he works there as he has a folder which he makes Ross (Schwimmer) sign at 0:47 to buy the sofa. The male character and Rachel (Aniston) look very bored at the beginning of the scene by their facial and body expression, the audience will notice this as they see the positions of the characters, however at 1:00 the characters facial and body expression turns into a more happier vibe when Rachel (Aniston) gets ready to go and the male character smiling as he has finally sold the sofa to Ross (Schswimmer). Towards 1:06-1:24 of the scene Ross (Schwimmer) tells Rachel (Aniston) to pick up the sofa, which Rachel (Aniston) is not happy about, the audience can tell she is not in a good mood as she talks sarcastically to Ross (Schwimmer) and then walks to the sofa to lift it up in a lazy position. At 1:32 Ross's (Schwimmer) facial expression turns from happy to dull as the male character has just told him that him and Rachel (Aniston) make a good couple, however Rachel (Aniston) gets frustrated at 1:40, hence she wants to get out of the store, the audience will be able to tell she is getting frustrated as she raises her eyebrows and is tired by her body position. The frame focuses on these three characters as they are the main focus to the audience at the moment.

Throughout the whole two minutes of the video, high key lighting has been used hence the audience are able to see the characters clearly making them realise the time of day too, as high key lighting is mostly used during the day or evening making the scene more realistic. Furthermore the lighting used connotes that they are at a store where there are customers behind them. The style of editing of the two minute scene is continuity edits as the setting is in one place, as mentioned above at the start of the scene at 0:00 to 0:02 a fade out/in has been used to convey the setting and mise en scene of the scene which is useful to the audience.

At the start of the scene at 0:00 to 0:04 a non-diegetic sound appears which is the theme tune of Friends, this suggests to the audience that the programme has started and they would automatically recognize that the programme is Friends. That part of the scene also includes a sound bridge as the non-diegetic sound of the theme tune from one scene (establishing shot of city) continuity edits through the visual image which then moves onto the next scene (sofa store). The sound bridge effect usually gives a smooth transition from one scene to the next to make the programme have continuity and have realistic effects for the audience. At 0:12 there is non-diegetic sound of the audience laughing at the characters, the audience that are laughing are targeted at us, as we would expect to laugh, this gives us a realistic atmosphere of the audience actually being in the scene laughing. Friends is a programme which is filmed live with a small group of audience therefore the realism of the audiences atmosphere connotes that the audience at home feel as if they are there too. The scene is focused on the two main characters and the male character who works at the store, therefore diegetic sound is being used as they are talking to each other also by the sounds that the characters make are also diegetic as the audience know where the sound is coming from.

The camera framing at the start of the scene is an establishing shot of the city which I have already mentioned above, the scene uses a sound bridge to make an smooth transition (fade out/in) to the next scene which is an long shot of the characters, as you watch the scene you can recognize the camera movement zooming out to frame the mise en sence of the scene so the audience are aware of the setting. At 0:11 of the scene the camera focuses on the two main characters Ross (Schwimmer) and Rachel (Aniston) suggested to the audience that they are the main attraction of the scene, as you watch the two minute sequence they are mainly framed together whereas the male character who works at the store is framed on his own connoting that he is not with the main characters. At 0:30 to 0:35 a 180-degree rule has been used to show that the characters are having an conversation, this is effective because the audience would have a point of view shot of the character who are speaking to the other character which is effective as they would see what the character is looking at. Medium shots have been used in the scene to focus on the characters talking, also to focus on the characters facial expression so the audience know how they are feeling and understand them.

I think the target audience for Friends would be young adults to middle aged working audience 15-34 year old, I think this because the narrative to Friends would relate to the target audience I have chosen which they would be able to appeal to. Friends is about six individuals who are all friends sharing their life stories and their problems which would appeal to the target audience as they would be going through the same things in reality. I think the social economic class for Friends would be class B to C2 and class E, hence the programme is targeted at middle class working audience therefore a demographic audience class of B could relate to this programme as the characters share about their lives to higher business, also as a student I watch Friends and I am under the class E demographic class. Furthermore the popular gender to watch this programme would be females I think as they would like to watch comedy shows more than males who would like to watch sports more. The psychographic attending to Friends I think are aspirers, explorers and reformers as they would be the perfect audience related to the social economic groups.

Hollyoaks

Hollyoaks is an British serial drama television soap opera created by Phil Redmond, the programme first broad-cased on Channel 4 on 23rd October 1995. The characters portrayed in Hollyoaks are generally being in their late teens or early twenties, however the soap has changed into an expanded cast to relate and attract an wider audience.
Hollyoaks starts off by an title sequence 0:00 – 0:31, the first scene portrays an extreme close up of a female characters eye opening with typography in her eye pupil which exposes the title of the programme ‘Hollyoaks’. Also at 0:19 again the title of the programme is established by one of the female character blowing a bubble gum which shows the typography of ‘Hollyoaks’ , I think the programme shows the title twice in the characters before the actual title is being shown to inform the audience that they are watching Hollyoaks. All the characters are individually introduced by posing at the camera making it look like they are looking at the audience; this grabs the audience’s attention as they would like to know who the main characters in Hollyoaks are. The setting in the title sequence suggests they are in a photo shoot area as there is bright lights flashing whenever the character changes, furthermore I think the facial and body expressions of the characters show they are trying to get the audience’s attention by looking into the camera such as the female characters giving seductive looks and poses and the male characters looking dominant and strong. Moreover throughout the title sequence different facial and body expressions are portrayed by different characters such as excited, serious, and happy, to show the audience all the characters have different lifestyles and stories in the programme. The costumes used are casual and outgoing clothing like dresses to relate to the audience as that’s what we would wear, moreover it is attractive as some of the audience would like what they wearing and would be interested into the character. The props used in the title sequence are three chairs to show different position of the characters and some of them are posing while standing up. The actual title ‘Hollyoaks’ is shown at 0:19. After the title, the scene changes into three settings between 0:31 to 1:16 showing three multi stranded narratives which focus on three main characters. The first two settings are set in a house living room and kitchen; the audience are able to establish the settings hence the props used in the scene such as the first setting in the living room having a television and the second setting in the kitchen having the sink, kettle and laundry basket full of clothes etc. The last setting is however outdoors at a cash machine where a female character takes out a bank statement receipt, as she looks at the receipt the audience would suggest she is in trouble with money as her facial expressions change into serious, confused scared look. The first setting shows a female character folding clothes as another female character walks into the house silently, the first female character who is folding the clothes looks at the other character mysteriously as she is very quiet and walks past connoting the audience there is conflict or a problem also by their facial expressions as she looks down and walks past giving the audience enigma codes. The second setting in the kitchen shows a young male character holding a baby, looking at a milk bottle in the sink, trying the switch on the kettle and light however does not turn on due to paying the electricity bills I assume. This could connote that he is struggling with money too. This also could relate to some of the audience as they have struggled in the past about money and know how he is feeling. His facial expressions and body expressions show he is frustrated and scared as he looks at the baby, making the audience feel sympathy towards him. After 0:16 of the clip the scene changes into the first multi stranded narrative of the two female characters which is the main storyline after 0:16. The setting of the scene is in the living room and kitchen, as the characters talk awkwardly connoting the audience there is conflict between them as they don’t make eye contact while talking at first.

Throughout the two minutes of the clip through the title sequence, multi stranded narrative and main storyline high key lighting has been used. The multi stranded narrative and main storyline connote the scenes are taken place during the day time as it is bright exposing the characters. The title sequences is also high key lighting however uses top lighting more as the light comes from above to accentuate the features of the characters shown individually to the audience. Furthermore I think in the multi stranded narrative the second scene at 0:45 to 1:05 uses low key lighting as light shadows are created connoting he is in a dim area.

The style of editing used in the title sequence is fast paced which uses a number of transitions before the character changes such as a wipe, slide, dissolve, zoom in and out. All the transitions used are very attractive and grabs the audience’s attention as the edits are fast therefore they would want to be amused into the programme to see who is acting in the programme. Furthermore in the title sequence typography has been used in the background to keep the audience paying attention. The two minute clip show all the characters involved in Hollyoaks however narrows down to four characters in the multi stranded narrative then to two characters in the main storyline, I think all edits are a montage sequence as the setting of the programme looks like it is based around a neighbourhood.

From 0:00 to 0:31 the title sequence has non diegetic music in the background which is the theme tune to Hollyoaks, this connotes the audience that the programme as started and they would realise by the theme tune that it is Hollyoaks. As the scene changes into the multi stranded narrative from 0:31 to 1:16 still non diegetic sound is being playing in the background however it is a different music. The last scene of the multi stranded narrative to the main storyline uses a sound bridge to create a smooth transition from one scene to the next; the non diegetic music slowly fades out as the characters start to talk. From 1:18 to 2:00 of the clip diegetic sound is used as the audience know where the sound is coming from such as the dialogue between the two female characters.

There are a number of camera frames used during the title sequence such as the extreme close up of a female characters eye at the start. The frames used from 0:00 to 0:31 are mainly closes up, medium shots, long shot, zoom in and out and low and high angle shots of the characters. All the characters are mostly positioned in the centre of the scene to make the audience know they are the main focus in the scene, all the characters are represented mostly in close ups and medium shots to show their facial expressions more. However at 0:10 of the clip I think a long shot has been used of the male character jumping as the audience can see his whole body, this is the only scene where a long shot has been used whereas the rest are close ups or medium shots. The camera movement from 0:32 is a tilt as the camera slowly moves up on the female character establishing the audience who she is, then slowly zooms out to relieve the setting of the scene and the other female character who walks in. At 0:45 a tracking shot of the male character are shown which is all shown in a medium shot of what he is doing. The third setting in the multi stranded narrative also show a tracking shot of the female character walking away from the cash machine which changes into a over the shoulder shot making the audience assume they are looking over the character at what she is looking at (point of view shot). From 1:43 to 2:00 the 180 degree rule as been used between the two female characters during dialogue, this technique has been used so that the audience are able to see from both characters point of views. Moreover the scene is shown in a medium shot as they are standing up, also there is a close up at 1:56 of card making it the main focus and which she hands over to the other character making the audience think what it is (enigma code).

Lastly the target audience for Hollyoaks would be teenagers and adults between 15-34 year olds hence the narrative/storyline would appeal to them more, as the programme has realism aspects which would relate to the target audience I have suggested such as relationships, family problems, financial problems, friendship, love, and etc. Hollyoaks focuses on different narratives in each episode to keep the audience targeted entertained and amused, by the characters lives and problems which the target audience would be interested in as it could relate to them. I think the social economic class for Hollyoaks would be class C1 – E because the programme is targeted at mostly at a young audience such as the teenagers who would be in the demographic class of E. Furthermore the characters in Hollyoaks are young adults who are unemployed or unskilled manual workers which relate to the target audience as they maybe going through the same lifestyle. In addition I think the popular gender to watch Hollyoaks would be females as much as males hence females tend to watch dramas that involve relationships, love, betrayal, friendship more than males as they would be more interested in sports and other programmes more associated with them. Furthermore I think the psychographics for Hollyoaks would be explorers, aspirers, strugglers and reformers, all these psychographics seek for enlightenment, escape, discovery and status which relates to the programme strongly.

90210

90210 is an American teen drama television series created by Rob Thomas, Jeff Judah and Gage Sachs, the programme first series was produced by CBS Productions however is now produced by CBS Television Studios. The programme has been franchised by Beverly Hill to create 90210 it is also set around young students who live in Beverly Hills.

I will be analysing the mise on scene of 90210, the setting of the scene is based around a swimming resort (Hot tub pool), the audience are aware that the setting is in a hot, exotic environment by the costumes the characters are wearing such as swimming/bathing suits, bikinis. The female character at the beginning of the scene is called Naomi Clark played by AnnaLynne McCord, Naomi (McCord) is wearing a blue swimming suit with a cheetah print robe, the audience would suggest she is glamorous and rich as what she is wearing and the setting of the scene which look very expensive connoting she is enchanting. The props used in the scene also connote that they are in a popular resort, somewhere hot and relaxing for a holiday, the scene involves props such as sun beds, table umbrellas and towels etc like you would find in a holiday hotel. Furthermore the characters in the pool are having a cocktail which also the audience may suggests that they are rich from an upper class business lifestyle. As Naomi (McCord) is presented first in the scene the audience may suggest she is the main character as the other characters are portrayed after her, at 0:12 of the scene the male characters facial expression suggests he is confused whereas Naomi’s (McCord) facial and body expressions connote she is serious and more dominant in the scene as she is standing above the other characters. At 0:37 of the scene the male characters facial expression connote the audience that he may be interested in Naomi (McCord) as she takes of her robe to get into the pool with the others, he looks amazed and is attracted to her. There are five characters introduced in this scene however there are only two main characters who exchange dialogue, at the end of the scene 1:49 the fifth character is established who looks totally different from the other characters as she is dressed up as a Goth wearing mostly black and red. There is a big difference between the characters in the pool to the young female character dressed up as Goth as the audience would see she has a different personality to the others also suggesting her age too.

The lighting during this two minute scene is represented using high key lighting as the scene is captured during the day time. Furthermore the audience are able to identify all the characters features, making them aware of the characters in 90210. Moreover the style of editing used at the start of the scene is a fade in effect which then uses cuts between the two main characters to exchange dialogue. The edits are continuity edits as the audience would stay focused and would be interested in what the characters are saying.

Throughout the whole two minute scene non diegetic sound/music is heard in the background which plays throughout connoting they are in a peaceful relaxing environment as the music sounds calm and happy. However diegetic sound also has been used throughout the scene which is the hot tub pool which is making water bubble noises, furthermore the characters dialogue is another form of diegetic sound as the audience know where the sound is coming from.

The cinematography at 0:07 shows the male character looking up at Naomi (McCord) which is a high angle shot suggesting the audience that Naomi (McCord) is more dominant than the other characters in the scene. Also at 0:10 Naomi (McCord) is portrayed using a low angle shot connoting the dominant character. However at 0:39 to 1:48 of the scene the 180 degree rule has been used when the characters use dialogue, this is effective as the audience are in a point of view shot of the character talking to the other character, making the audience see the characters facial expressions as they talk also to be amused. At 0:03 a long shot of Naomi (McCord) is represented as she poses, again I think they used a long shot only for  her to inform the audience that she is the main character in the scene. Throughout the whole scene medium shots have been used to identify the characters to make the audience see their facial and body expressions, moreover at 0:36 of the scene a tracking shot has been used as Naomi (McCord) walks down to get into the swimming pool to keep the audience attracted. Lastly at the end of scene 1:49 a tilt shot has been used to establish the fifth odd character then focused using a medium shot.

Overall I think the target audience aimed for 90210 are teenagers and young adults around 15 – 26 years of age. I think this because this programme would mostly appeal to this target audience as the narrative/storyline could relate to the audience intended such as the glamour, relationships and drama in 90210. The gender which would be most attracted to this programme would be females more than males as 90210 has aspects of female aspirations, they are more interested in watching dramas involved with relationships and amusing characters. I think the social economic group of 90210 would be classes A - C1 and E, I think A-C1 hence of the lifestyle of some characters in programme as they live a wealthy successful life which would strongly relate to the A-C1 demographic class. In addition I also think the demographic of E class would relate to 90210 as teenagers watch the programme too such as students. Lastly I think the appropriate psychographic groups would be mainstreamers, aspirers, succeeders and reformers as they all seek for security, status, control and enlightenment which all relate to 90210.

Misfits

Misfits is a British science fiction comedy drama television created and written by Howard Overman, the first series started broadcasting on E4 on the 12th November 2009. The programme is about a group of young offenders sentenced to work for community service however get attacked by a strange storm which they obtain supernatural powers from.

Misfits scene starts off by the group opening a coffin which contains a male character inside, the mise en scene clearly suggests to the audience that it is set in a graveyard hence at 0:00 the audience are able to see all the gravestones followed by the group opening the coffin. There are five main characters in the scene that all portray different identities, from 0:05 to 0:19 all the characters show dissimilar facial and body expressions which connotes they are confused and sad that they have lost one of their friends. They are all gathered around the coffin looking disappointed and upset which suggests the audience that something bad has happened also making them think how the male character has died which is called creating enigma codes. At 0:20 the female character reaches out to touch the male character in the coffin, this scene creates tension as the edit is slow, the scene follows a jumpy scare to the audience as everything is calm however the male character scares the other characters showing their facial and body expressions which connote the audience they are scared and frightened. Furthermore the male character in the coffin looks well and alive which creates enigma codes to the audience as this character was just seen dead in a coffin, little as they know that he has immortality power. At 0:29 and 0:33 the two male characters facial expressions are very intimate as they look very scared and shocked, the audience would be expecting this reaction as they would be confused too, also feel like they are in the characters positions hence the tension created before was effective keeping the audience amused and engaged. The male character that just got of the coffin looks more dominant and relaxed who looks like the leader of the group, the audience may suggest this because of his attitude related to his facial and body expressions. At 1:54 the male character that walks away in a funny way may connote the audience that he is humorous by his body expressions portrayed making the audience think of him less serious, whereas the other characters establish a more serious confused body expression while watching him walk away. The props used in the scene is not clearly identified at the beginning when one of the character forces the coffin open, I think it was a spade.

The lighting throughout the scene is high key lighting as the audience are able to identify all the characters features, moreover the time of day looks like the scene was set in the afternoon as it is bright however the scene does look a bit dim to create realism of the mise en scene which is the graveyard which connotes darkness, death, negativity emotions. In addition Misfits style of editing is continuity edits to keep the audience engaged. At the beginning of the scene all the characters are established in single edits, to inform the audience the number of characters in that scene, they all look to one character which we the audience see as their point of view. Furthermore in each edit the character who is exchanging dialogue is the main focus as the background or the other background character in the scene are slightly blurred, this is to make the audience engaged with the character talking. 0:25 to 0:28 of the clip fast edits are used to portray the captions of each character reactions; the audience would have felt tension before the scene and would have impacted them with a scare as it was unexpected. This scene would create the audience to be focused and they would want to know what has happened (enigma codes).

In Misfits both non diegetic sound and deigetic sound has been used effectively to create tension towards the audience. From 0:00 till 0:25 of the scene non diegetic sound/music are used in the background to engage the audience. The non diegetic sound is very effective as it creates suspense; the non diegetic sound gradually starts to increase its pace to the suspense so the audience experience the effect of the characters feelings. However the non diegetic sound appears at the end of the scene at 1:42 as the main character makes a dramatic exist suggesting the audience something is going to happen creating enigma codes. In addition throughout the scene diegetic sound has been used as the characters exchange dialogue also because the audience know where the sound is coming from therefore it’s called diegetic sound.

The cinematography at the start of the scene shows an long shot/establishing shot of the setting informing the audience where the scene has taken place, the mise en scene suggest the audience that the setting is based in a graveyard due to the grave stones the characters are around. All the characters are portrayed in medium shots to focus on their facial expressions so the audience are aware of how they are feeling. At 0:20 of the scene a high angle shot has been used to focus on the main character who is in the coffin, usually a high angle shot connotes a character is much dominant and powerful whereas a low angle shot connotes a character is more vulnerable and scared, moreover for this scene a high angle shot has been used suggesting the audience he is powerful in a way although he is in a coffin which creates enigma codes. At 0:43 of the scene a tilt movement has been used to capture the characters body and facial expressions, as the male character gets up the audience are able to see expressions on the character connoting he is in pain. Furthermore at 0:55 and 1:06 a tracking shot has been used on the male character as he walks as he is the main character in the scene suggesting the audience that he is the dominant out of the group. A 180 degree rule shot has been used at 1:09 till 1:16 between the two male characters as they change dialogue which focuses on the facial and body expressions so the audience are aware how they are feeling. Also the audience are in the characters point of view as both sides of the characters are being portrayed giving the audience of what both characters are feeling. At the end of the scene a long shot has been used to capture all the characters as the main male character walks away, all the characters are showing different emotions which the audience are able tell by their body and facial expressions. Overall the whole scene I think has been used by using a stead-cam sequence as the camera appears to be moving around a lot, this is effective as the scene looks more realistic and captures the characters extended actions.

Last of all I think the intended target audience for Misfits would be teenagers and young adults around 15-24 year olds. I think this because Misfits contains strong language and some sexual scenes which are inappropriate for an audience who are younger than 15 years, the target audience I have chosen is appropriate as the certificate class of 15 allows some sexual content and strong language therefore I have chosen 15-24 year olds also as the characters are quite young and use informal language the programme would appeal to more younger viewers so they can relate to the characters whereas an elder audience wouldn’t understand and be offended by the context used in the programme. The programme is a group with both female and males therefore I think both genders are attracted to this programme by the strong adult humour, and teenage life style which is being portrayed. I think the social economic group of Misfits would be classes of C2-E, I think this because C2-E audience would relate to the characters more as they are unemployed, working for the government, moreover the E class I think would be suited more as students (teenagers) would watch the programme more as adults they would have more time. Lastly I also think the psychographic groups which would be appropriate for Misfits would be strugglers as they seek for escape which relates to the programme very well as the characters want to find their own identities and escape for freedom.

Made In Chelsea

Made in Chelsea is a scripted British reality television programme produced by David Granger, the programme is broadcasted by E4. Made in Chelsea is about characters that play version of themselves in the wealthy Chelsea district of London however their roles have been scripted for entertainment purposes. This programme is similar to the ITV2 programme ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ another scripted British reality television programme. The programme follows the lives of several real, young, affluent personalities.

Made in Chelsea has two different settings introduced in this scene, this first setting that the audience see is a posh white building where the main male character is being introduced, at 0:10 of the scene the second setting is portrayed to the audience where the second main character is introduced who is a female. The second setting shows a female character sitting in a posh high class cafe, both settings connote luxury and wealthy therefore the audience are aware that the characters in this programme are from an affluent background. Furthermore the characters costumes and make up clearly suggest that both characters are from high class backgrounds, the male character is wearing a suit which connotes the audience that he is a working business man who has a successful life as he in a television programme. Also the prop the male character is wearing is a gold ring which also connotes rich, wealthy and successful. Moreover the female character also suggests wealthy as she is wearing a fur coat and sat in a posh cafe, the props around the female character show luxury lifestyle connoting the audience that she is also a successful women in the industry. At the start of the scene when dialogue starts both characters facial and body expressions are portrayed serious however during the conversation they look relaxed which inform the audience. At 1:06 of the scene the first setting of the building where the male character is, is established more for the audience which reveals another female character. The female character and the male character in the scene are the main characters from now as more props are being introduced; she is painting a portrait of the male character sitting holding a globe. This scene shows the male character is more dominant as the female character is painting a portrait of him, as he is holding a globe this may connote that he is in control and likes to travel around. The portrait also suggests the audience of another element of the male character being wealthy. The female character who is painting connotes she is from a lower class than the male character as she is listening to instructions from the character, furthermore her costume and make up also suggest the audience that she is from a not wealthy background however lucky to work with these characters as she would be paid a lot of money.

Throughout the scene high key lighting has been used as the audience are able to see the characters features clearly also the audience are aware that the scene is taken place during the day as it is bright. Additionally the style of editing in this programme I think is montage editing at the start of the scene as the camera establishes a shot of the whole building, then a shot of the building window which then continues into the building which is an office. A montage edit sequence involves shots being placed next to each other that do not necessarily convey a linear narrative therefore also the edits of the two shot of the building informs the audience that the setting is based inside the building. During the edits of the building at the beginning at 0:03, typography has been used which says ‘Francis Boulle Enterprise’ this informs the audience where the setting is which the male characters office is. When dialogue is being exchanged the edits turn into continuity edits as each characters that are in a conversations are in single edits to connote the audience that they are the main characters. As each character talks the edit focuses on them to show their facial and body expressions so the audience can follow what is going on and relate to them.

The sounds used in made in Chelsea are non diegetic and diegetic sound. At the beginning of the scene non diegetic sound has been used to introduce the setting, the non diegetic sound is of classical music in the background which suggests the audience that the setting of the scene is posh and wealthy for upper class audience. In addition a sound bridge has been used of the scene of the building to the inside of the building which is diegetic sound of a mobile phone ringing at 0:05 till 0:07. The non diegetic sound gradually decreases however is still played in the background very quietly, on top of that the dialogue between the two characters start which is diegetic sound as the audience know where the sound is coming from. At 1:10 of the scene the non diegetic sound/music eventually stops and continues with diegetic sound conversation from the two characters.

Furthermore the Cinematography used at the start of the scene is called a tilt where the camera moves down the building revealing the setting to the audience, it then changes into a shot of the building window which slowly zooms in connoting the next scene would take place inside the building. At 0:07 the main male character is portrayed in a medium shot of the character picking up a phone call, the shot changes into the second setting where the female character is talking to the male character. She is also shown is a medium shot, which shows the characters facial and body expressions connoting the audience how they are feeling. At 0:16 the shot is a long shot of the female character in a cafe, the camera focuses on the character as the background and the other features in the scene for example the props are blurred, also for the audience to be attracted to the character. At 0:41 the edit is a medium shot of the male character the audience are able to see his body expressions as he is sat on a chair holding a globe relaxed, also his costume connotes the audience he is wealthy. At 1:06 a long shot has been used to establish where the characters are which is at the male characters office, the shot also reveals what the characters are doing. The shot is followed by a point of view shot (over the shoulder) of the female character looking at the male character; this allows the audience to see the male character from the female’s perspectives as she is painting a portrait of him. From 1:11 to 1:14 a tracking shot of the female characters arm is used to make the audience focus on what she is dong making the audience attracted to the painting too. At 1:23 a close up of the painting is taken as they want the audience to see how talented the female character is and the painting which clearly establishes the male character connoting he is of high class and rich to be making a portrait of himself.

Finally I think the target audience expected for Made in Chelsea are teenagers and young adults around 16-26 years of age. I think this hence Made in Chelsea has young successful characters that influence the audience who watch this programme. This programme portrays individuals who are successful in the business media industry and have wealthy lifestyles which every young adult would wish for therefore this target audience would be more appealed to watch this programme furthermore it is a scripted reality programme which entertains the intended audience. In addition I think the popular gender to watch this programme are females as they tend to watch reality programmes as it has aspects of real relationships, friendship, problems whereas the male audience would like to watch something that relates to them such as sports and action films. Moreover I think the social economic group of this programme would be classes A-C1 also class E, I think this because the characters in the programme are of higher and middle management/managers who are very successful as they are in a programme therefore the programme would relate to classes A-C1, furthermore I chose class E too as students would watch this programme, they are in the demographic class of E. Lastly the psychographic groups that would be appropriate for Made in Chelsea would be mainstreamers, aspires, succeeders, explorers and reformers as they all seek for security, status, control, discovery and enlightenment which all relate to the programme.
